Transformer installation

Selection, installation, testing and replacement of distribution transformers, from small pole-mounted units to large substation transformers.

Installing a transformer correctly

A transformer runs day and night for decades, so a wrong rating or a poor installation costs money for the whole of its life. We start by calculating the real demand of the project with diversity factors, then select the standard rating that leaves room for future growth without oversizing.

Installation covers the foundation, safety clearances, MV and LV connections, the earthing system and the tests that must be passed before the transformer is energised.

  • Oil-immersed transformers, conservator and hermetic types
  • Dry-type (cast resin) transformers for indoor and high-occupancy buildings
  • Pole-mounted and ground-mounted installation
  • Replacement and upgrade of existing transformers

Our scope

Frequently asked questions

Oil-immersed or dry-type?
Oil-immersed transformers cost less and have lower losses, and suit outdoor and dedicated substations. Dry-type transformers are preferred inside buildings such as hospitals and towers, where fire safety has priority.
Can a transformer be upgraded later?
Yes, but if the room, switchgear and cables were not designed for a larger unit, the upgrade will involve more work. It is better to plan for future demand from the start.
