Grid connection and power supply

Everything a project needs to receive a new supply or increase an existing one, from the first load calculation to energisation.

The longest stage of many projects

Getting power to a new project is often the last and slowest stage of construction. Calculating the demand, applying to the utility, paying connection charges, building a substation or reinforcing the network and installing metering each take time, and without experience they can take months.

We handle these steps for the client, keep the technical work in parallel with the rest of the project and coordinate with the utility until the supply is energised.

  • Demand calculation with realistic diversity factors
  • New connections for commercial, residential and industrial projects
  • Supply increases for existing sites
  • Metering panels and handover to the utility

Steps to a new connection

  1. Demand calculationDetermining the required capacity and the connection type: LV, MV or dedicated substation.
  2. ApplicationSubmitting the application to the utility and receiving the technical conditions and charges.
  3. WorksBuilding the substation and cable connection, or reinforcing the network.
  4. EnergisationFinal inspection, metering and connection of the supply.

Frequently asked questions

Why should demand be calculated carefully?
Connection charges usually depend on the contracted demand. Adding up the ratings of all equipment gives a figure much higher than the real need; diversity factors give a realistic result.
Do procedures differ between countries?
Yes. Each utility has its own application process, charges and technical rules. We review them at the start of each project.
