Substation construction and equipping

Indoor, outdoor and compact distribution substations, designed, supplied and built by one contractor and handed over ready for energisation.

When does a project need its own substation?

When the demand of a project exceeds what the local low-voltage network can supply, the utility usually asks for a dedicated substation. Shopping centres, office towers, large residential developments and factories almost always fall into this group.

A substation is more than a transformer in a room. It includes MV switchgear, the transformer, the LV main switchboard, cabling, the earthing system, protection and lighting, and every part has to meet the utility’s technical requirements before the supply is connected.

  • Indoor substations in a dedicated room or building
  • Outdoor and pole-mounted substations
  • Compact (kiosk) prefabricated substations
  • Substations up to 63 kV

What the work includes

Design

Single-line diagram, room layout, equipment ratings and cable routes.

Equipment supply

Transformer, RMU or MV switchgear, LV board and accessories from approved manufacturers.

Civil and installation works

Foundations, cable trenches, oil pit where needed, installation and connection of equipment.

Earthing and protection

Earthing system, protection settings and safety equipment.

Testing

Insulation, earthing and functional tests before energisation.

Handover

Final inspection with the utility and connection to the grid.

Project stages

  1. Load studyCalculating the real demand and deciding the substation type and transformer rating.
  2. Utility approvalSubmitting the design and obtaining the technical conditions of the connection.
  3. ConstructionBuilding and equipping the substation in parallel with the rest of the project.
  4. EnergisationTests, inspection and connection with the utility’s representative.

Frequently asked questions

Indoor or compact substation: which is better?
A compact substation needs less construction time and space and suits sites with an open area. An indoor substation fits buildings that have a dedicated room, especially when higher capacity or several transformers are needed.
Who owns the substation after energisation?
It depends on the contract with the utility. In some cases the customer owns and maintains it; in others the utility takes over operation. This should be agreed before construction.
How long does a substation project take?
It depends on the substation type, equipment lead times and the approval process. We prepare a schedule after the site survey.
